Job Description Summary
The Project Manager will manage the Hidden Costs of Global Supply Chains research project, providing direction and oversight with regard to the research activities of the project, to ensure that project deliverables are fulfilled. Responsibilities include managing and forecasting the budget, overseeing the project schedule, and managing records of the project.
The Project Manager is also responsible for identifying funding sources, developing funding applications and managing budgets and grants in collaboration with researchers, granting agencies, and departments across campus.
Organizational Status
Hidden Costs of Global Supply Chains is a multi-year grant-funded research and journalistic project that aims to reveal the consequences of global supply chains. Our investigative partnerships include seasoned award-winning journalists, who are collaborating with leading scholars and students to embark on ambitious reporting projects. Partners also include several major media organizations around the world. One of the stated goals of the project is the development of the UBC Global Reporting Centre, and to that end, the Project Manager will help strategize on developing future projects and funding to maintain and grow the centre.
Work Performed
- Managing the research project budget including forecasting, implementing, monitoring and ensuring compliance with various funding sources as well as UBC.
- Planning, developing, writing and editing funding applications
- Identifying funding sources; pursuing potential funding and research partnerships
- Writing and producing financial and narrative reports for granting agencies
- Developing and implementing research project plans, timelines and strategies for research projects; Evaluating and analyzing research data
- Developing and implementing processes for the efficient administration, organization, and operation of the research project, including project proposals, protocols, priorities, work plans and timelines
- Managing the production and dissemination of research projects outputs, including journals, publications, major media productions, exhibit, and all other knowledge translation activities
- Organizing and running national and international workshops, meetings, and other events, from conception through to execution and evaluation.
- Managing and developing relationship with various partners including media organizations, research support organizations, SSHRC and UBC VPRI and major foundations
- Communicating project goals, directing research and production outputs, and working with partners to disseminate findings
- Development of collaborative agreements and contracts involving researchers, granting agencies, and departments across campus
- Managing requests from UBC Public Affairs and media outlets, including determining appropriate resource/expert from the partnership team and facilitating connection
- Planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating knowledge exchange strategies using web-based platforms that are tailored to the focus of the Hidden Costs project.
- Identifying gaps and opportunities for improving existing research knowledge exchange strategies
- In consultation with the PI and research team, the Project Manager will lead the development of the websites, media productions, and research outputs. This also includes, but is not limited to, designing, maintaining and updating the multi-media websites using the content management system, incorporating additional content development and design, and reporting on the online analytics using tools such as Google Analytics and YouTube Analytics.
- The Project Manager will also manage and participate in the development of the UBC Global Reporting Centre, which is a key output in the SSHRC Hidden Costs project
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Project Manager makes professional decisions and recommendations on all aspects of the research work and is responsible for the quality of research activities. Poor performance could jeopardize the research project and result in loss of funding. Errors in judgment will result in damage to the reputation of the project and the credibility of its findings, Faculty and University and endanger future industry collaborations and or/funding opportunities. Given the investigative nature of the research serious errors in judgement could have a detrimental and monetary impact on the University.
Supervision Received
The Project Manager reports to the Project Director. The Project Manager is given wide latitude and expected to exercise independent decision making. Although guidance will be given by the Project Director, the Project Manager must be strongly self-motivated, able to exercise sound, independent judgment, and be aware of all possible consequences of his/her actions for the welfare of the project.
Supervision Given
The Project Manager and the Director provide direction to research teams, media and industry partners. The Project Manager may supervise junior researchers, research assistants and technicians, junior staff, students, volunteers, and independent contractors.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years’ experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Journalism preferred. Experience in managing project budgets, demonstrated experience in grant funding application and in research project management. Academic or professional experience in researching and writing about supply chains. Ability to analyze and interpret data. Ability to gather, record and organize information. Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues and effectively resolve these. Ability to exercise sound judgement including the exercise of tact, discretion and confidentiality. Advanced knowledge of Excel and Word, Windows or Mac operating systems, typing skills; effective oral and written communication, organizational and time management skills. Advanced level of computer literacy in web-based technologies (eg, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Analytics, Wordpress, HTML, CSS). Excellent knowledge of website management and the ability to use web-based technologies to develop effective e-knowledge translation to disseminate research findings and support uptake. Ability to initiate and conduct research projects.
