DATA SCIENTIST AT HEXAGON, CHICAGO
Hexagon is a purposefully small (some prefer ‘boutique’), non-productized, custom analytics and strategy firm. Each of those descriptors is intentional and has been empowering choices throughout the last eight years.
Our first two Data Scientist recruits were brought in before the moniker of Data Science became mainstream. As we assess future candidates, we are excited to co-develop and co-evolve how applied math contributes to business, while we maintain a fun and happy (though not laid-back) workplace for all.
The Work we do is for a small roster of clients to examine their customer and/or business and/or operations data. Our work is characterized by ambiguous, non-specific explorations often with limited handholding from clients or colleagues. Our work tends to be upstream of formal implementations or model deployments and often creates specific business cases and prototypes for those deployments. Our work is usually in partnership with a range of client teams including Digital Transformation, Marketing, Product Development, Business Strategy & Operations.
The Role & The Skills: We asked our outgoing Data Scientists to describe what they did during their tenure and combined this with how our current Data Scientists see their role – we think this is a more authentic way of sharing a job profile. We expect that the individual who takes on this role will pick up this role with a fresh perspective and healthy curiosity, shaping the role in the coming years around her/his/their motivations and in context of the rapid evolution of the AI/ML/Data Science space - both at a technical level and in its applications.
Specific Project Examples:
- Detect process patterns through data transformation and mining.
- Anomaly detection (both in process and in business performance).
- Identify high value acquisition targets using behavior and profile data.
- Standardize unstructured data using cleaning, parsing, and clustering techniques.
- Utilize NLP/embedding techniques to contextualize unstructured business data.
Required Competencies:
- Convert business questions into mathematical frameworks.
- Leverage messy, incomplete, and real-world data sets.
- Build visualizations to help illustrate results to broad spectrum of stakeholders.
- Explain machine learning and mathematical results to our business partners.
- Measure the causal impact of key features.
Technical skills:
Applicants should have a strong command of Python and SQL. Experience with cloud computing platforms (GCP/AWS), coursework in statistics, and Tableau experience are a plus.
Pop-A-Shot score improvements are also an ongoing assumption! Other desirable non-technical skills are:
- An innate curiosity about a plethora of spaces and the ability to relate this back to our day jobs.
- Being comfortable with ambiguity
- Humility in recognizing the limits of data or analytics or your understanding of a business.
- Being willing to explore in open-ended ways (apply less-familiar methods) and willing to put stakes in the ground on how explorations can be exploited for business impact.
Other Things to Consider:
The individual taking on this role will collaborate with her/his/their colleagues - in Data Science and Strategy Translation. The team is based in Chicago with a downtown office. The role is hybrid, and we expect a need for presence in the office 3 days per week (this frequency has been increasing). We think it is important to have on-site, in-person time with the rest of the Hexagon team and our clients. This has been a key part of how we get more intimate with the data, how we provoke & challenge each other, and how we do things that larger teams are often less effective at accomplishing. The work dynamic is fast paced (from hypotheses to methods to datasets to debugging to reviews and often back to the drawing board) and involves active dialog and healthy debate throughout. While we expect everyone on the team to be learning continuously, this work dynamic tends to suit those who have a high level of fluency and facility in their areas of competency.
We expect this person to have around 5 years of related Corporate work experience in the US.
