The editorial director focuses on a key Johnnie Studio client in the B2B tech space and creates content that spans technical business messaging, longform editorial, branding campaigns, video, web writing, and whatever else comes our way. This individual will seamlessly transition between lead writer/editor on designated projects and manager to a team of writers/editors, overseeing their work quality, processes, and experience. They will collaborate with project managers, strategists, designers, and stakeholders in their day-to-day work.
The editorial director will report to the senior editorial director and work closely with them to create and maintain the ecosystem of the client’s editorial department by assessing, managing, and executing on both internal and external account needs. As a manager, they will help to hire and onboard new editorial resources, optimize cross-team operations, manage resourcing, and institute the tools, guidelines, and standards that help their reports to adhere to best practices and successfully execute against client needs.
Responsibilities
- Act as lead writer/editor on high-impact projects, delivering excellent-quality editorial work.
- Work with client and senior team members to plan overarching editorial visions, including short-term and long-term goals and strategies. Convey that vision to managing editors and writers and provide the tools and oversight necessary to ensure that vision is consistent.
- Support in hiring and onboarding writers, both in-house and freelance, with the necessary qualifications and skillsets to achieve high-quality editorial.
- Collaborate with clients, account managers, strategists, designers, and proofreaders/freelance writers to develop efficient, comprehensive processes and best practices that ensure quality.
- Review copy to ensure it is compelling, clean, and adheres to both the project requirements, aligns to the respective overarching client style guide, and achieves strategic goals.
- Prepare writers and managing editors with the tools and guidance they need to create high-quality editorial across projects.
- Manage copywriters, managing editors, and freelance writers to ensure a positive working experience on the project. For direct reports, regularly check in on, assess, and support their progress, weekly/daily workloads, skill development, job satisfaction, and career goals.
- Continual development, ownership, and deep understanding of each client’s style guide, voice, and tone. Implement and maintain high editorial standards that ensure top quality editorial across the account.
- Ensure adherence to and ongoing improvement of our editorial processes.
- Regularly gauge the current and upcoming needs for the account. Work closely with account management and project management to prepare editorial resourcing for forecasted project.

- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- A creative concepter and leader who can identify and manage editorial needs across the Microsoft account.
- Readiness to dig in, learn complex subject matter, and ensure that all writers and managing editors are prepared with the knowledge and materials they need for successful project execution.
- Ability to manage writers and support their skill development.
- Experience writing and managing content for enterprise-level organizations.
- A strategic leader who can prioritize across the account and keep a dual focus on micro and macro initiatives.
- A collaborative spirit and a resourceful approach.
- Ability to streamline, interpret, and implement feedback from clients and team members.
- Excellent organizational skills and an eye for consistency across projects.
- Research skills, including ensuring all content aligns with source copy and background documentation.
- A nimble mind and ability to think one step ahead, solving for problems before they arise.
Requirements
8+ years in the field, including:
- Experience in a director-level position
- Experience in an agency setting
- B2B business writing experience
- Management experience
- Experience writing in the tech space
