Job Profile:
This role will work directly with a team of data modelers and database administrators to analyze, build, develop, and/or design modern databases in the cloud as well as provide expert guidance for the ongoing implementation, enhancement, or maintenance of existing Sybase Databases. This individual will also be responsible for ensuring strict adherence to the established database governance policies and procedures including data access and security.
This is a remote job opportunity with occasional (planned) travel to Alexandria, Northern Virginia.
Job Description:
• Lead database architecture changes by working with database management and enterprise architecture teams in alignment with the long-term vision and strategy.
• Maintain accountability for establishing the Data Architecture vision and championing efforts to reach that vision. Serve as the in-house database expert and authority by defining, implementing, and enforcing all data integration standards and documentation.
• Continually review and suggest improvements to Data Architecture processes, policies, and vision. Explore new and emerging technologies, leading the investigation and adaptation of beneficial Data Architecture technologies and tools.
• Lead strategy, development, and implementation of an Enterprise Data Model and strategy development for usage of Operational Data Stores.
• Contribute to developing transparent and well-understood enterprise data governance processes, rules, and technologies to support them.
• Collaborate with business units, data owners, and DBA teams to successfully implement database solutions to address business requirements. Identify and promote best practices for data modeling within information areas, providing oversight for all activities related to data cleansing, data quality, and data consolidation using industry-standard data modeling methods and processes.
• Demonstrate ability to communicate the overall customer data architecture to both technical and business constituencies.
• Develop guidelines and best practices to ensure data standardization and consistency.
• Lead the design of exception handling, data cleansing/standardization procedures, and business transformation rules and logic.
• Lead the development of processes to avoid redundancy in data elements, where applicable.
• Manage end-to-end data architecture, from selecting the platform, designing the technical architecture, developing the application, to finally testing and implementing the proposed solution.
• Define and manage the flow of data and dissemination of information within the organization.
• Integrate technical functionality, ensuring data accessibility, accuracy, and security.
• Conduct a continuous audit of the data management system performance, refining whenever required.
• Guide and perform the migration from a system using Sybase and stored procedures to a modern microservices architecture based on AWS technologies such as Postgres Aurora, DMS, Lambda, etc.
• Plan and execute phased migrations via data domains, ensuring old and new databases are kept in sync using innovative approaches.
Required Skills:
• 6+ years of experience in Data Architecture, Data modeling, Database design, and administration.
• In-depth knowledge of Sybase or PostgreSQL platforms.
•Solid AWS data-related experience
• Deep understanding of relational DBMS and SQL, with attention to detail.
• Experience with data modeling tools such as ERStudio, ERWIN, PowerDesigner.
• Proficiency in AWS technologies including but not limited to Aurora, RDS, DMS, Lambda, and other related services.
• Experience in planning and executing phased migrations, ensuring synchronization between old and new systems.
• Strong understanding of microservices architecture and its implementation.
• Ability to present solutions precisely to various levels of management and work across different groups as well as perform limited project management to implement the proposed solutions.
• Excellent verbal and written communication as well as documentation skills.
Preferred Skills:
• Previous experience with database-related project management.
• Database and project management certifications.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science or a related field.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant hands-on technical experience in an Agile/DevOps enterprise environment.
• Demonstrable senior-level expertise in the following disciplines: Cloud Services and Solutions; Database Administration and Development; Analytical Sciences; Information Technology Governance; Information Security; Information Technology Resource Management; Business Case Development; Business Process Design; Strategic Planning; and Business Functions.
• Experience with innovative approaches to data synchronization during phased migrations.
