Canyon Scholars, over the past 24 years, has become a premier “pipeline of compassion” for impoverished youth trapped in the Copper Canyon region of NW Mexico, an area dominated by criminal activity. Our mission has supported over 770 children through scholarships and educational programs, enabling them to return to their communities as nurses, doctors, teachers, and lawyers. Our goal is to create regional stability, reclaim land, and promote healthier lives.
Job Summary:
We seek a proactive, well-organized, highly skilled, and overachieving administrative leader to gain hands-on experience in all operations of an exciting educational non-profit. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about education, mentoring, and social justice. The position offers a stipend and the satisfaction of contributing to meaningful world change while working with a dedicated team of volunteers.
Remote/Hours:
This work is remote and potentially seasonal, fluctuating from 5-20 hours a week. We are open to splitting projects between 1-3 people to find team members with a range of administrative skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Management:
- Assist with special projects such as fundraising campaigns, volunteer recruitment, social media campaigns, sponsor satisfaction surveys, student story database updates, and community outreach.
Administrative Support:
- Provide general administrative support, including answering phones, proofreading and editing, correspondence dictation, and email management.
- Assist with scheduling service club talks and meetings, preparing agendas, and taking minutes.
- Help with travel arrangements and expense reports.
Database Management:
- Update and maintain donor and volunteer databases.
- Assist with data entry and reporting; create simple spreadsheets.
- Generate mailing lists and other reports as needed.
Communications, Simple Design, and Marketing:
- Assist with creating, simple graphic design, and distributing newsletters, brochures, and other marketing materials.
- Update website content and social media channels.
- Assist with event promotion and outreach.
Knowledge of:
- Office administration and management practices.
- Project management methodologies and best practices.
- Non-profit organizational dynamics and challenges.
- Document management and record-keeping procedures.
Skills in:
- Organizing and coordinating administrative tasks and office operations.
- Developing and managing project plans, schedules, and budgets.
- Utilizing office and project management software and tools.
- Communicating effectively with team members, stakeholders, and external partners.
- Preparing and distributing professional correspondence and reports.
- Problem-solving and conflict resolution.
Ability to:
- Work independently and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Adapt to changing project requirements and organizational priorities.
- Collaborate with diverse teams and build strong working relationships.
- Maintain attention to detail and ensure accuracy in administrative tasks.
- Handle sensitive information with confidentiality.
Qualifications:
- 5-7 years of business world experience with strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Excellent communication, writing, editing, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle relational stresses or misunderstandings maturely and become a reliable team player.
- Strong interest in non-profit work and administration with a passion for education, mentoring, Latino/indigenous youth, poverty reduction, Mexican culture, and/or social justice.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and experience with database management software (e.g., Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge) is a plus.
- Sales skills or an interest in fundraising is a plus.
- Ability to speak or translate Spanish is highly desirable.
- Cross-cultural experience is helpful.
- Simple graphic design skills are a plus.

Pay and Benefits:
This position is voluntary, remote with weekly Zoom instructions and clear deliverables. You will receive a stipend at the end of each month and have a 1099, self-employment status, if applicable. Benefits include:
