Overview
This position is responsible for the daily work and work flow within the operating room (OR). The Clinical Coordinator/OR Charge RN works with the surgery director to ensure operational and infection control standards are upheld. The OR Charge RN is integrally involved in ensuring that staff, patients, and equipment come together seamlessly to move patients through the surgical process.
Responsibilities
Coordinates the surgery schedule to ensure correctness, effectiveness, and that all staffing and equipment needs are met.
Leads weekly case planning meetings with sterile processing personel and surgical technicians to ensure all instruments, equipment and disposable supplies are available for the scheduled surgeries.
Daily staffing: assigns staff to specific surgery service lines based on training and aptitude as able. Assigns or gives breaks and lunches as needed. Steps in to assist when needed in all areas when there are sick calls or emergencies. Creates and maintains the six-week work and call schedule; coordinates with staff to ensure accuracy and fairness.
Surgery daily flow: assists with room turnovers and set ups. Assists as able during the start and end of each case. Leads daily 5 minute huddle with staff to review cases of the day, staffing, and any other pertinent information.
Communicates with anesthesiologists and surgeons concerning timing, delays, and any changes to the daily schedule. Writes the daily schedule on the tracking board and works to keep the information current and updated. Acts as the point person for the O.R. suite for concerns, complaints, etc. from staff, surgeons, and others as needed.
Maintains good working relationship with Clinical Coordinator/SCU Charge RN (pre and postop unit) for coordination of care for all patients in all phases of the surgical process. Has frequent and effective communication throughout the day to expedite with accuracy and safety the daily workload.
Assists with coordination of add-on cases including inpatients for timing, staffing, as well as communication out to all other necessary persons.
Ensures a safe, aseptic, and productive work environment. Assists the director in providing ongoing training to staff and in collecting performance improvement data. Assists Director with O.R. quality metrics and performance improvement activities.
Provides feedback to the director and participates in hiring decisions and performance evaluations for O.R. RN staff, Surgical Technicians, Sterile Processing staff, and other non-nursing staff assigned to the O.R. May provides leadership when the director is unavailable; acts as a role model to all staff.
Qualifications
Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program. BSN preferred.Experience: At least 2 years operating room experience; minimum 1 year leadership experience.Licenses & Certifications: Current California RN license; ACLS; BLSRequired Skills & Knowledge: Strong communication skills; ability to multi-task with strong organization and coordination skills. Proficient on computer with skills in Microsoft Office and Outlook. Knowledgeable about sterile processing environment and standards.

Actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to level of experience, education, special skills and/or certifications.
