Smithsonian Books publishes narrative nonfiction books in categories where the Smithsonian's authority is unparalleled, such as history, science and technology, and art. We also produce signature illustrated books based on our museums and collections.
The Smithsonian Books Marketing Internship offers a unique opportunity to learn about all aspects of book publishing while making meaningful contributions to book projects and building skills and gaining valuable experience in marketing, publicity, sales, and project management.
Throughout the experience, the intern will:
- Learn how to research and update media and publicity databases.
- Learn about the maintenance of media, customer, and course adoption databases.
- Have to opportunity to build skills and experience in marketing, publicity and sales support.
- Learn about the backlist sales process for reprints and print on demand editions
- Build skills in social media marketing skills by working internally and with museums to create timed social media posts.
The intern will get a first-hand look at how a book goes from concept to publication (both print and digitally), how books are presented, marketed, publicized, and sold to the trade and library marketplaces. The intern will learn important real-world skills related to book publishing and project management, will have the opportunity to participate in the Smithsonian Books publishing program, and actively learn about the publishing industry.
The candidate who would most benefit from this experience will be media savvy, reliable, organized, and self-motivated, with great attention to detail and the ability to work successfully as part of a team. We’re looking for excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with a professional and courteous manner. The ideal candidate should be currently enrolled in a marketing related BA/MA degree program in a related field of study or a recent graduate with an active interest in publishing and marketing.

Internship Details
- 3-6 months in duration. Preference given to candidates who can commit to longer periods of time
- 16-24 hours a week, flexible schedule. Can be remote or hybrid.
- Unpaid internship: willing to work with candidates to achieve course credit
