Reporting to the Communications Manager, the Communications Specialist is an excellent writer and digital storyteller, skilled at creating content supporting the nation’s leading veteran service organization. The Communications Specialist possesses strong attention to detail and a creative eye. They have the knowledge and technical expertise that results in effective brand management and the confidence and competency to initiate and manage media relationships on behalf of the organization.

Responsibilities
- Articulate a point of view that helps shape the strategic direction of marketing and communication efforts; collaborate with internal teams and external partners to assign in building compelling strategies that achieve organizational goals with meaningful, on-brand creative concepts
- Manage relationships with external media entities, serving as a primary point of contact for Hire Heroes USA
- Lead the copywriting and editing efforts for various communications, including internal newsletters, blogs, memos, and press releases; ensuring all content is clear, engaging, and consistent with Hire Heroes USA’s brand voice
- Interact with comments, posts, and Hire Heroes USA’s partners on social media
- Work closely with program teams to identify, source, and vet suitable clients for media opportunities; ensuring that selected clients align with the organization's messaging and objectives
- Build, foster, and maintain a national network of media contacts, pitching stories and positioning Hire Heroes USA as a thought leader; working autonomously to meet tight deadlines with accuracy and relevance
- Possess excellent writing skills, promptly and proactively proofread content to ensure accuracy, clarity, consistency, and adherence to brand voice
- Deliver polished concepts to Marketing & Communications leadership for creative review and finish work on time at a level worthy of publication
- Assist with the planning and marketing of Hire Heroes USA special events and fundraising campaigns as needed
- Implement and manage media monitoring tools to track coverage and sentiment about Hire Heroes USA; compile monthly reports on media activities, assess the impact of press coverage, and provide actionable insights to inform media strategies
Desired Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field or equivalent experience
- 2-3 years of experience working in communications: writing press releases, developing media strategies, pitching stories, and managing social media
- Strong writing skills, impeccable grammar, and excellent proofreading ability
- Ability to successfully manage competing priorities with meticulous attention to detail
- A confident contributor who takes initiative and likes a creative challenge
- Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism among colleagues, Hire Heroes USA partners, and external parties
- Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud and brand management tools is a plus

- Travel Required: Up to 10%

Estimated New Hire Salary: $46,850 - $52,782 annually
Hire Heroes USA may offer additional compensation to include annual bonuses, merit increases, cost of living, special or extra assignments outside scope of the role, cell phone stipend, internet stipend, relocation, awards, compensatory time off, overtime, and gaining knowledge and proficiency through certifications and licensing.
