Overview
This role involves providing compassionate and timely medical advice to patients over the phone. It is critical in ensuring that patients receive the right guidance and support, particularly during emergencies or after-hours situations. Responsibilities include assessing patient symptoms, providing appropriate medical advice, and coordinating necessary care while maintaining high standards of professionalism.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct telephonic assessments to evaluate patient symptoms and determine the required level of care.
- Provide accurate and timely medical guidance based on established protocols, including Schmidt/Thompson guidelines.
- Triage patient calls to prioritize medical needs and ensure urgent cases receive prompt attention.
- Document all patient interactions and assessments accurately and thoroughly.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers, including physicians and emergency services, to coordinate patient care.
- Adhere to legal and ethical standards in providing telephonic medical advice.
- Utilize up-to-date medical information and resources to support patient care.
- Communicate clearly to ensure patients understand and comply with medical advice and instructions.
- Adapt to a variety of telephonic medical situations with flexibility and effectiveness.
- Participate in ongoing training to stay current with medical protocols and best practices.
- Maintain professionalism and empathy in all patient interactions.
Required Qualifications
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) License, with a State of Illinois License or willingness to apply promptly.
- Compact State Licensure, with the willingness to obtain it if not already possessed.
- Minimum of 2 years of clinical nursing experience, preferably in emergency or urgent care settings.
- Demonstrated experience in triage or telephone triage nursing.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology and healthcare processes.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proficient in assessing and prioritizing patient needs accurately.
- Experienced with electronic medical records (EMR) and telephonic systems.
- Strong critical thinking and decision-making abilities in high-pressure situations.
- Ability to work independently and efficiently in a remote setting.
- Knowledge of and commitment to legal and ethical standards in telephonic medical advice.
- Dedication to providing exceptional patient care and support.
- Flexibility to work varied shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, particularly the 12am - 8am shifts.
- Effective multitasking and management of telephonic nursing duties.
- Willingness to undergo necessary background checks for remote nursing practice.
Position Details
- Full-time: 32 hours per week with benefits.
- Part-time: Minimum of 15 hours per week.
