SUMMARY: Kommissary nourishes and empowers communities, upholding the universal right to cultural, nutritious, and delicious meals of exceptional quality. We are looking for full-time bilingual (English/Spanish) HR Assistants to work on-site in our Long Island City office. The HR Assistants will primarily work within recruitment, payroll and benefits. They will support the HR team in administrative tasks, ensuring smooth and efficient operations. Along with the rest of HR, the HR Assistants will support the full Kommissary team in achieving its critical mission.

REPORTS TO: Director of Human Resources
SCHEDULE: Full-time on-site (40 hours/week); will work 5 days/week, including certain Saturdays and Sundays every month
Duties/Responsibilities
- Greet job candidates and other visitors.
- Serve as a point of contact for employee inquiries regarding HR policies, processes, and benefits.
- Provide English/Spanish translation (written and verbal) as needed.
- Participate significantly in the recruitment process, including posting job advertisements, helping to screen resumes, contacting candidates, coordinating interviews, and attending career fairs.
- Provide payroll and benefits support – onboarding; changes of status; time and attendance; departures; open enrollment.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records, including benefits-related.
- Assist in HR reporting. Help ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
- Coordinate meetings; create and distribute meeting materials.
- Support running all employee engagement events.
- Provide administrative support as needed to the Human Resources function.
- Other projects as required.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Must be bilingual in English/Spanish. Must have solid written and oral communication skills in both languages. Will be interacting with Spanish-speaking job candidates and colleagues.
- Additional languages helpful.
- Strong Google software (GMail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Contacts, Forms, Slides, Contacts, Chat, Meet, etc.).
- Experience with HRIS and payroll systems; Paylocity preferred.
- Ability to prioritize work and deliver customer/employee support.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, learn quickly, and work independently.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with colleagues.
- Should be detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Basic knowledge of HR principles and practices.
- High level of discretion and confidentiality.
- Ability to both work independently and as part of a team.
Education And Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, preferred.
- 1-3 years Human Resources experience, preferably in hospitality industry and/or startup organizations.
- SHRM-CP a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Full-time (40 hours/week), on-site position.
- Five days/week, including certain Saturdays and Sundays, as scheduled.
- Prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to access and navigate organization’s off-site facilities and other local organizations.
