The Atlantic is looking for an associate visuals editor to join the newsroom. The ideal candidate will be highly creative and a driven problem-solver with sound journalistic judgment and superb aesthetic taste. This candidate should be comfortable researching and assigning photography in many genres, have excellent communication skills, and enjoy working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. Illustration experience is preferred.
The associate visuals editor will research, commission, and create images for
Atlantic stories with a focus on daily digital coverage.
The ideal candidate is a clear communicator and team player who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment across multiple teams in the newsroom. They should have a wide range of knowledge about photography and digital storytelling, and be able to identify a diverse array of artists to contribute to
The Atlantic. They should also be detail-oriented and able to oversee assignments beyond the ideation stage, from managing correspondence with freelancers to ensuring that all work meets design, production, and editorial standards.
Responsibilities Include
- Research, license, and edit imagery with a focus on daily digital coverage
- Create photo collages and photo illustrations
- Occasionally commission original photography and illustration
- Create story layouts in newsroom CMS
- Assist with visual coverage for social media platforms
- Contribute to The Atlantic’s rolodex of photographers and illustrators
Skills And Qualifications
- 2+years of working with and art directing photography preferably with digital newsroom experience
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with potential for night and weekend work
- Strong collaborative skills
- Outside-the-box creative thinking
- Mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud
This position is based in New York City.
Salary minimum: $65,000; Salary Maximum: $80,000
