Team Lead - Database Engineering

Overview: This role involves overseeing a team responsible for the day-to-day management and support of all databases and data warehouses. The position provides Tier 2 and 3 support for client-server and mainframe applications requiring database expertise. The role is approximately 30% technical and 70% management, with on-call availability required 24/7, 365 days a year. While on-call situations do not occur often, the ability to respond when needed is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a team of Database Engineers, including staffing decisions, performance evaluations, training, coaching, and mentoring.
- Oversee daily support and service delivery for database functions, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Supervise project-related activities, working with both internal and external project management professionals to ensure successful outcomes.
- Manage vendor relationships, including selection, contract negotiation, and review of statements of work (SOW).
- Adhere to IT policies, processes, and procedures, and proactively seek opportunities for process improvement, particularly within ITIL frameworks.
- Evaluate and recommend technology solutions, participating in decisions related to purchasing, development, modification, and implementation.
- Contribute to the development of operational and tactical plans related to database functions.
- Ensure 24/7, 365 on-call availability to support critical database issues, maintaining readiness to address emergencies as needed.

- Technical Expertise:
- SQL Server: Expert level required.
- DB2: Some exposure preferred.
- Mainframe: Experience preferred.
- Snowflake: Experience would be a plus.
- Azure: Familiarity would be advantageous.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to resolve conflicts quickly and align team goals with the organization’s strategic vision.

- Proactive in identifying areas for improvement and developing actionable plans.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
- 7-10 years of IT experience, including 2-3 years of management experience with direct reports in database administration and support within an enterprise environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- ITIL Foundation certification preferred.
