Position Overview:
University Data and Institutional Reporting (UDIR) is a unit within Institutional Analysis (IA) having, among other duties, primary responsibility for authoritative institutional data, reporting, and analysis for the University of Minnesota system. UDIR’s portfolio includes a wide range of data and reporting activities including the production of official data required for the University’s compliance reporting efforts (e.g. IPEDS, NCAA, MN OHE, HLC), related reporting dashboards (e.g. https://idr.umn.edu), decision support for university leadership, ad hoc data requests, and ensuring the integrity of official institutional data.
This data analyst position reports to the team lead of the Data and Reporting Group within University Data and Institutional Reporting (UDIR). UDIR is searching for a data analyst to join an established team to address the data and reporting needs primarily related to human resources, and the cost pool areas. It is responsible for designing, building, and delivering data and reporting solutions for a variety of highly-complex, mission critical projects within UDIR’s portfolio, with a particular focus on human resource data-related topics including but not limited to producing data that leads to official HR headcounts, the completion of state, federal and local HR surveys, and in responding to a range of internal and external ad hoc data requests. In addition this position is responsible for producing institutional data used in the University management process referred to as the cost pools. These cost pools include data from a number of subject areas such as student enrollment, human resources, and sponsored projects expenditures.
Given its scope of responsibility, UDIR data projects are often collaborative endeavors, and so this position will alternate between serving as primary and secondary analyst depending on the project.
Salary Range: $86,000 - $108,000
This is a hybrid role, working in office as needed.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
20% - Critical Reports and Projects
- Creates human resources (HR) snapshot data used to produce official University data, reporting and statistics for human resources subject areas.
- Serve as primary analyst, to produce selected critical reports and projection jobs to include official HR headcounts, used in System Wide Strategic Plan MPact 2025 Metrics, the Accountability report, and many state, federal and local reports and surveys.
- Participate and cooperate with data exchange consortia to which the University belongs.
- Cross train with others in UDIR to effectively function in either a primary or secondary analyst role in performing the suite of HR related critical reports, projects and production jobs including other HR related compliance work.
- Prepares headcount data used by the Budget Office in preparing data used in the Cost Pool process that calculates aggregate student, and HR headcounts by college and department.
30% - High Visibility Reports and Surveys
- Responsible for human resources-related reporting around salaries, demographics, and other descriptive statistics general HR related high visibility reports.
- Complete selected Association of American Universities Data Exchange (AAUDE) survey items related to administrators, faculty, and graduate students.
- Responsible for completing several external surveys such as the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR), and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), and others.
- In collaboration with the Office of Human Resources work to prepare workforce metrics for Board of Regents presentations.
- Other selected high visibility reports, and surveys as assigned.
40% - Ad Hoc Data Requests
- Provide reporting at the request of senior leaders of the University in a timely manner.
- Provide accurate and timely reports to internal and external audiences.
- Prepare and submit institutional and campus reports that include human resources, student enrollments, and general student subject areas reporting.
- Develop data and reporting solutions for ad hoc data requests that involve new metrics or are not well defined or are considered advanced data requests.
- Ongoing refinement of code/processes to improve efficiencies in ad hoc and cyclical data request processes.
10% - Special Projects
- Participate in special projects that may include projects such as the Systemwide Strategic Plan, the Accountability report, and others as needed.
- Participates in advancing the operational, and strategic direction of the office.
- Prepares requirements documentation for complex systems, and data integrations to address advanced data and reporting needs.
- Employ emerging data science techniques and methods to activate new and large data sets of importance to the University.

What you'll need:
- Bachelor's degree with at least 6 years of experience.
- Demonstrated experience in SQL and database management systems such as Oracle, MySQL / MariaDB, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, etc, or AWS/Azure equivalents.
- Experience working with large enterprise data warehouses or business intelligence systems.
- Demonstrated experience promoting a diverse, inclusive and respectful workplace.
- Ability to work collaboratively and across disciplines with administrators, faculty, staff, and students from a wide range of programs and backgrounds
