Scope of the Position:
The Graphic Designer works collaboratively as a member of the Experience team to ensure a strategic, consistent brand-focused, high-quality visual aesthetic of all print and digital communications to support attendance and revenue-generating initiatives under the leadership of the Director of Art and Design and in cross-departmental collaboration across the museum.
Specific responsibilities of the Graphic Designer include creating original designs for print and digital communications as well as overseeing any and all aspects of production on time and within budget.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design, produce, and/or oversee production of graphic projects including but not limited to marketing and advertising communications and materials, institutional print and digital publications, special event invitations, presentation materials, educational and programming brochures and interpretative materials, wayfinding, attendance and revenue driving initiatives, and signage for exhibition and permanent collection installations for the building/campus of the DMA
- Implement and maintain the visual application of the Museum’s brand and ensure that the Museum’s graphic identity/brand and graphic standards are adhered to consistently throughout the Museum
- Ensure consistency and quality of exhibition and permanent collection installation graphics
- Collaborate on design of web-based communications, including online communications, e-newsletters, and the Museum’s web sites and social media outlets
- Oversee external contractors for the design, production, delivery, and installation of graphics
- Consult with freelance production artists, photographers, illustrators, and other creative agencies to collaborate on creative concepts and final product deliverables as needed
- Assist in the protection of the Museum copyright as well as that of the art works and artists
- Responsible for keeping informed about current and new production methods and media, especially those allowing innovation in design
- Attend departmental and other museum strategic planning meetings as required
- Track all materials necessary for timely installation of graphic elements, to ensure all materials, including text and images, are procured in a timely manner and help ensure accuracy of text
- Manage the production of graphics, including scheduling, negotiating costs, approving and routing proofs, and press checks to ensure quality of production, timely delivery, and meeting agreed deadlines
- Prepare and recommend budgets for graphic projects. Estimate and negotiate costs with vendors, and maintain quality control of outside production
- Schedule the delivery of graphics projects on time and within budget
- Maintain inventory of graphics equipment, tools, and supplies, and monitor their condition
- Manage the storage and in-house distribution of printed materials
- Other duties, as assigned
Requirements
Education, Experience, and Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or closely related field or comparable work experience required
- 1-2 years’ experience in a graphic design role encompassing initial concept stage to final press check and experience with graphic production processes preferred
Key Qualifications:
- Fluent in Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and Acrobat on Mac OSX platform
- Excellent judgment in creating designs with compelling typography, color palettes, and layouts; must be able to prepare designs for print or web
- Superior graphic design skills and ability to visually communicate consistent and effective brand standards across multiple projects
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with teams
- Inclination to gather information and remain abreast of new and best practices in graphic design
- Superior organizational planning, budgetary, and project timeline abilities including the ability to plan, develop, monitor, and manage a significant, detailed production schedule of multiple projects simultaneously with flexibility, and a proven ability to stay on schedule and budget
- Ability to solve problems and prioritize to meet a variety of needs in situations where immediate decisions may be necessary
- Ability to maintain professional relationships with the public and co-workers
- Ability to meet short- and long-term deadlines and maintain fiscal accountability
- Extremely detail oriented
- Accurate typing/keyboarding skills
- Experience working with media, marketing, and advertising
- Experience in web design and HTML coding is a plus
