The
Software AI Engineer plays a key role in the learner’s experience across the EdPlus digital portfolio.
The individual will be responsible for delivering robust technology solutions and partnering with the other leads to iterate, optimize, and enhance digital experiences for online learners. The ideal candidate will possess deep technical expertise in software development and artificial intelligence, with a proven track record of developing scalable AI solutions. The ideal candidate will also mentor and oversee work produced by junior engineers, student
developers, and contractors.
The Solutions Engineering team is responsible for creating solutions and enhancing our current technology stack for a variety of challenges as part of an innovative environment refining how users engage with higher education. Working collaboratively in diverse teams creates forward-thinking and thoughtful experiences ensuring web products support ASU and EdPlus overall strategy and goals.
Essential Duties
- Design and architect robust, scalable AI solutions that integrate with our existing systems and infrastructure.
- Develop, optimize, and deploy complex AI and machine learning models, including deep learning, reinforcement learning, and other advanced techniques.
- Conduct rigorous testing, evaluation, and optimization of models to ensure high performance, accuracy, and reliability in production environments.
- Work closely with AI product owners, data scientists, and other engineers to translate business requirements into technical specifications and solutions.
- Stay current with AI trends and implement improvements to existing systems and workflows.
- Ensure comprehensive documentation of AI models, algorithms, and systems and adherence to AI ethics, data privacy, and compliance standards.
- Optimize AI models for performance, scalability, and efficiency, leveraging cloud-based resources and distributed computing frameworks.
- Troubleshoot and resolve AI-related issues, ensuring the reliability and accuracy of AI-driven applications.
- Develop and demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of cutting-edge AI proof of concepts.
- Flexibility to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, adapt to changing requirements and learn new technologies as needed.
- Contribute to the larger IT community across the University.
- Assume or coordinate other duties as assigned or directed.
Desired Qualifications
- Four years of hands-on software development experience.
- Experience in communicating with cross-functional teams about various engineering topics such as system architecture, detailed design, APIs, etc.
- Experience with programming languages such as Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar AI frameworks
- Experience in Javascript, HTML5, CSS3 and NodeJS.
- Strong experience with at least one major JS library / framework such as VueJS, ReactJS.
- Understanding of both front-end and back-end web technologies: HTTP(S), XML, JSON, JSONP, AJAX, REST APIs, and GraphQL.
- Experience in task runners/bundlers like gulp.js and webpack
- Experience developing AI/ML solutions on platforms like AWS, GCP, Azure, OpenAI, Databricks, Snowflake, etc
- Demonstrated knowledge of software development lifecycle and standard methodologies.
- Ability to communicate thoughtfully, using problem-solving skills and build positive working relationships with cross-functional teams.
- Experience developing applications that build AI APIs into smart agents
- Experience developing applications using multimodal AI models
- Experience designing, developing, and implementing generative AI models and algorithms, utilizing large language models (LLMs) for applications such as text generation, audio-to-text transcription, and qualitative data insights
- Experience designing, developing, and deploying Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) models using vector databases, including strategies for embedding, chunking, and indexing to build domain-specific chatbots
- Experience developing resilient foundations for collecting, storing, modeling, and analyzing massive data sets from multiple sources
- Experience with data manipulation and analysis using tools like Pandas, NumPy, and SQL
- Expertise in data cleaning and processing, model training, and evaluation techniques
- Ability to preprocess and curate text data, including cleaning, tokenization, and data augmentation, to prepare it for training and model evaluation
- Ability to build high-level and detailed design plans for AI and ML solutions, selecting suitable algorithms, data sources, infrastructure, and technologies that align with organizational goals
- Experience conducting experiments, fine-tuning models, and optimizing their performance for accuracy and efficiency
- A passion for ethical AI and a drive to solve real-world problems using AI technology
- Ability to complete projects with minimal supervision and direction.
- Evidence of effective communication skills
- Evidence of a bachelor’s degree or higher in a related field.

Working Environment
EdPlus at ASU is located at SkySong, the ASU Scottsdale Innovation Center. The center houses a diverse business community that links technology, research, education, and entrepreneurship to position ASU and Greater Phoenix as global leaders in the knowledge economy.
Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting or standing. Daily use of desktop or laptop computer is required. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties. Regular review of completed tasks.
EdPlus at ASU supports flexible work options, ranging from alternate work schedules to hybrid remote work schedules, subject to approvals per ASU policy. (This is not a fully remote position.)
