Job Overview:
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Data Scientist to join our startup self-storage property management company. As a startup, you will get the opportunity to grow with us, wear multiple hats, help form the base culture / strategy for the company, interact directly with the CEO, and be in on the ground floor of an exciting new venture. Our organization is building a use case library of different products, advanced analytic algorithms, and one-off data science use cases. We need a leading Data Scientist who can work with our organization to make these use cases into reality as we look to establish digital and analytical leadership in self-storage – an industry that has been relatively slow to adopt modern approaches leaving a lot of value on the table! In this role, you will be responsible for establishing our data analytics and product building approach including the following – selecting and working with contractor Data Engineers and Data Architects that can help us build the right Data Layers, developing a Data Science and Product “Roadmap” to lay out the critical use cases at our organization and think about approaches to build those out and work with leaders to translate your work and progress in clear terms.

Responsibilities:
· Identify and Partner with Data Engineers / Architects: We have not built out our data layers yet. We believe that this likely will require contractors, but we would like our Data Scientist to have input on who and how we partner to set up the critical data infrastructure.
· Develop a Data Science and Product “Roadmap”: Work with our business leaders to establish a product-roadmap including resources needed against the critical use cases our organization has defined. We will need you to be able to guide our leadership on different options (e.g., we must use contractors in a certain area due to unique expertise, we can use contractors to accelerate, or there is a lighter version that can solve 90% of the answer in much shorter time).
· Execute and oversee the “Roadmap”: You will be expected to be able to handle some of the use cases where capacity exists to build critical functionality or directly handle data analytics where possible to build out the use cases. Where contractors or other resources are needed due to unique expertise or capacity reasons, you will help ensure the quality and timeliness of their work.
· Translate and provide update to leadership: You will work with leaders to translate your work and progress in clear terms. Note that leadership has some, but limited experience leading and working with Data Scientists, Data Engineers, and Data Architects.
· Maintain assets: You will develop an approach to ensure assets are well-maintained and functionality does not drop over time and documented in the event that a critical resource is not available. This could include hiring or contracting for support if it does not introduce risk that we won’t have internal capability to fix a critical error within an internal asset. We have a strong preference for user-friendly tools that ideally minimize complex tech needs – e.g., visualization dashboards we would likely prefer the MS stack including PowerBI recognizing the tradeoff of customization vs. user-friendliness.
Sample Potential Data Science and Product Needs:
· Provide insights into competitor pricing for tenured customers – e.g., how advertised, introductory prices may correlate with current pricing for customers at different stages of a customer’s tenure (that have evolved beyond their introductory price)? This will likely require machine-learning given the large data sets and variables involved.
· Develop and optimize financial models for budgeting and forecasting within our asset management framework by working with a team to streamline large Excel models, reducing calculation times and improving user experience. Note that we have an existing tool in Microsoft Excel that is ready to move to a more dynamic toolset.
· Design and implement a dynamic checklist solution that customizes daily tasks for managers based on various factors such as day of the week and recent customer interactions.
· Conduct rate A/B/C testing experiments – e.g., what is impact on customer conversion by removing various fees? What is impact on customer retention of different rate increase approaches?
· Conduct one-off operational analyses – e.g., what are clear characteristics of our customers that are highest cost-to-serve (i.e., do they access the unit the most), etc.?
Qualifications:
· Experience: Proven experience (5+ years) as a Data Scientist, Data Engineering or similar role, preferably in the self-storage or real estate industry.
· Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
· Technical Skills: Must be able to build PowerBI visualizations and be well-versed in Python, Databricks, Jupiter, Data Factory or similar tools. Skilled and fluent in statistical methods to determine validity of analysis, data, etc.

· Technical Knowledge: Up-to-date on latest Programming Languages, Data Manipulation and Analysis Tools, Machine Learning and AI Frameworks, Data Visualization, and Cloud Platforms.
· Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and attention to detail in data analysis and reporting.
· Communication: Capable of communicating to executives who aren’t deep in Data Science methodologies (e.g., unfamiliar with coding language, etc.), but have some programming background and deep analytical background
