Requirements
*** Open to candidates in North and South America ***
You:
- Enjoy working on small, fast-paced teams.
- Are Fluent with Kubernetes and associated containerization technologies.
- Have strong, proven experience:
- working with Amazon Web Services (AWS), having designed, built and maintained cloud platforms that run production-grade services and traffic.
- building and maintaining platforms using Terraform (or similar infrastructure as code technologies)
- Solve complex and difficult engineering problems.
- Comprehend software development design patterns.
- Preferably, have prior experience with:
- Go, Rust, Typescript, and Java.
- Building and maintaining tools and CI/CD pipelines.
- Developing Kubernetes operators.
- Capacity and load testing of distributed applications.
- Hands-on, operational performance measurement and benchmarking.
- Working independently on self-prioritized tasks.
- Are biased toward action. When you see problems, you fix them.
- Care more about building an impactful and delightful product than about using any particular technology.
- Sweat the details and take pride in your craft.
- Have excellent communication and collaboration skills, and find ways to develop empathy for your users.
- Work hours that are aligned with US timezones (UTC-8 to UTC-4).
You will:
- Code in high-level languages (e.g. Go, Rust, Java, Python) in addition to shell-languages.
- Engage in and improve the whole lifecycle of services — from inception and design, deployment, operation, and refinement.
- Scale systems sustainably by automation; drive changes that improve reliability and velocity.
- Establish incident response systems and perform blameless postmortems to prevent problem recurrence.
- Develop tools for monitoring, instrumentation, and disaster recovery of critical systems.
- Own enterprise wide critical services such as database and deployment pipelines.
- Collaborate with software engineers from product teams to establish, maintain, and optimize CI/CD pipelines.
- Debug hard problems on large distributed systems.
What You’ll Be Working On
The role
Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) ensure that our systems run smoothly, our software engineers can achieve speed and quality goals, and help us plan for future growth. Our SREs assist product-driven engineering teams and are key contributors within our engineering efforts. SREs bring together many concepts including Software Engineering, DevOps, Systems Administration, and Network Engineering. Site Reliability Engineering is a specialization focused on Reliability, Scalability, and Efficiency. Like classical Software Engineers, SREs are expected to have solid development skills. More broadly, they will also understand the operating systems (Linux), infrastructure (AWS), and networking upon which our services rely.
About Synthesis
Co-founder Josh Dahn built Ad Astra school for Elon’s kids at SpaceX. Now, we are scaling the most ambitious ideas from Ad Astra, starting with the most innovative class:
Synthesis.
Synthesis teaches kids to collaboratively work with information like adults do. Students ages 6 to 14 meet once a week to form teams and play novel, complex games and simulations, moderated by an adult coach who encourages clear communication and rigorous analytical thinking. And that is just the beginning. We're building "Ender's Game for innovators", a global internet-native academy to accelerate learning for the world's most talented and driven students, those most likely to contribute to leaps in science and engineering that advance human progress.
We’ve grown revenue 5x in a little over a year – and we’d double again if we admitted everyone on our paid reservation list. Recently we raised $12M from Balaji S. Srinivasan (@balajis) and Amjad Masad (founder of Replit).
Synthesis is a purely remote team who, in addition to Ad Astra, have built Khan Academy, ClassDojo, Facebook, Google, Uber, Roam Research, and Flexport.
