Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), a Tony Award-winning nonprofit theatre dedicated to the production of contemporary plays and musicals, seeks a full-time staff member to work with the Artistic Director and Associate Artistic Director on producing MTC’s theatrical season.
For over fifty years, MTC has been the creative and artistic home for America’s most gifted theatrical artists, producing works of the highest quality by American and international playwrights. MTC produces up to eight plays annually in Broadway’s restored Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on West 47th Street and Off-Broadway at the historic NY City Center complex on West 55th Street.
Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Individual Giving is a senior member of MTC’s frontline fundraising team responsible for providing leadership, planning, and execution for Individual Giving fundraising initiatives, largely focused on the Patron Program, Artistic Director Circle, and Producing Partners. The Director will work closely and collaboratively with all team members to achieve annual fundraising goals, spearheading team efforts to raise more than $5M in individual annual support, across membership, philanthropic, and major gifts programs. The Director will help to determine annual goals and a strategy for achieving these goals.
Job Responsibilities:
§ Directly supervise the Individual Giving Team members, including Major Gifts Officer, Individual Giving Manager, and Development Assistant.
§ Develop and implement strategies to raise more than $5M annually. Take ownership of oversight of acquisitions, upgrades, increases, renewals, and benefit fulfillment.
§ Oversee the growth of MTC’s Patron ($3,000+) and Artistic Director Circle ($12,500+) programs, serving 700 donor households annually.
§ Reestablish and expand our Producing Partners program, focusing on project-, and production-specific campaigns, securing major gifts over $50,000.
§ Independently manage the identification, cultivation and solicitation process for a portfolio of approximately 150 prospects.
§ Conduct a minimum of 100 prospect meetings annually, with responsibility for managing communications and follow-up, including maintaining detailed activity reports and move management information on all prospects in the portfolio.
§ Work with core team of fundraisers on meeting income goals for annual fundraising events, including Benefit and Gala.
§ Improve other Individual Giving initiatives, including Moves Management practices and cultivation strategies such as prospecting, Playbill credits and more. Ensure strategies and reporting are in place to identify and move prospects to higher levels of giving.
Collaborate with Director of Development Operations and Strategy on Individual Giving data modelling, projections, and tracking, and management of wealth screening.
Effectively collaborates with other departments at MTC, including but not limited to: Marketing, Ticketing Services, Artistic, Literary and Business.
§ Work with Special Events staff on cultivation and prospecting event planning and execution, including welcome evenings, seminars, pre-show dinners and receptions, Opening Nights, and other events as necessary.
§ Interact with trustees, donors at all levels, and donor prospects, and coordinates all activities for the Patron Leadership Council (including quarterly meetings).
- Represent MTC at special events, including Opening Nights, ADC Salons, Patron Nights, Winter Benefit, Spring Gala, and others as needed.
- Promote positive donor relations and stewardship.
§ Perform additional duties and responsibilities as needed.
Requirements:
The best candidate is a talented fundraiser and leader who will have a track record of fundraising, including major ($100K) gifts, paired with strong managerial experiences.
§ Minimum 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in frontline fundraising; minimum of 3 years of management experience.
§ Supervisory experience demonstrating the ability to lead staff, mutually establish goals and manage performance.
§ A strong track record of fundraising, with direct experience cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding 5- and 6-figure commitments;
§ Experience working in a performing arts organization or the cultural sector preferred, but not required.
§ Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, and keen judgment.
§ Ability to be creative, enterprising, persuasive, and tactful
§ Proficiency with MS Office and Tessitura, and strong analytic skills.
§ Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills required
§ Solid understanding of fundraising principles and best practices.
§ Some evenings and weekend hours required.
