Rydberg Technologies is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Photonics Engineer to build next-generation lasers and photonics systems for atomic quantum devices and technologies. In this hands-on role you will be responsible for designing, developing, optimizing, and testing photonic devices and integrated optical systems, leveraging your expertise in photonics, optics, and related technologies to solve complex problems and drive innovation in various applications. You will work closely with cross-functional teams including physicists and engineers to integrate photonics devices into larger systems. Hands-on technical skills and experience: Narrow linewidth lasers (diode, DBR, fiber lasers, etc.) from 400-2000nm, optical amplifiers, modulators, isolators, diode and optical fiber coupling and collimation, heterogeneous and homogenous integration of photonic systems, photonic integrated circuit design, development, test, and integration, laser frequency stabilization, precision bonding and assembly techniques and tools, optical metrology and characterization, thermomechanical optical and engineering design (COMSOL, Zemax, Solidworks). Other desirable skills and experience include microfabrication, optics and material bonding, opto-electronics, ultra-stable EM cavities, frequency combs, electronics, RF and THz, and programming (C/C++, python, LabView).
Responsibilities include:Prototype and product Development: Lead the design, development, and fabrication of integrated photonic devices and systems.Research and Innovation: Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in photonic integrated circuit technologies, narrow-linewidth laser and quantum technology, and identify opportunities for innovation and improvement in product design and performance.Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including physicists, electrical engineers, and researchers, to integrate photonic components into larger systems.Documentation: Prepare detailed technical documentation, including research and development experimental procedures and outcomes, design specifications, test reports, and user manuals, to support product development and manufacturing.Problem Solving: Investigate and troubleshoot engineering issues related to photonic designs and components, propose and implement solutions to improve performance and reliability.Cost Management: Optimize development to meet cost targets while maintaining high-quality standards.Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
Qualifications: Master's or Ph.D. in Photonics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.Several years of relevant experience in integrated photonics product design and development.Proficiency in optical and engineering design software and simulation tools.Strong understanding of physics and engineering principles photonics and optics, and hardware components.Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.Strong communication and teamwork skills.Project management experience is a plus.Research and publication record may be required for senior-level positions.
