Axle is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail-oriented UI/UX Designer to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The ideal candidate must be comfortable participating in all aspects of the product design process and demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for learning and pursuing expertise to build modern interfaces that support the brand message and increase usability. He/She should also show combined knowledge/understanding of web/mobile design principles and front-end development concepts and relationships.

Responsibilities:
Collaborate with clients, product managers, stakeholders, and developers and gather user requirements and build rapid prototypes
Practice and apply User-Centered Design (UCD) process methods to UI design that can substantially improve the usability
Understand Iterative User Interface Design and the importance of user testing across the entire product development process
Work independently and collaboratively with the UX team to identify and execute high-fidelity UI design for various projects
Design Graphic User Interface (GUI) elements, including icons, navigational menus, tabs, buttons, data visualizations, etc.
Contribute to the design system and maintain web and mobile libraries
Understand research artifacts, including personas, journey maps, user flows, Information Architecture (IA), wireframes, sitemaps, and clickable prototypes, with oversight from design leadership
Knowledge of design constraints such as browser capabilities, media types, platform differences, operating systems, Identifying and troubleshooting UX problems, and bringing the best solutions (e.g., Responsiveness)
Create User-Centered Design (UCD) for all platforms (Desktop, Laptop, Tablet, Mobile, etc.)
Present work to clients, accept and respond appropriately to feedback, and conduct layout adjustments based on end-user feedback
Maintain responsibility for completion and accuracy of work products and the ability to problem-solve and offer ideas to address client issues
Communicate design findings, ideas, and recommendations in verbal, written, and visual form
Qualification:
Bachelor's degree in Interaction Design, Graphic Design, or equivalent design-related field
3 to 5 years of experience as a visual User Interface (UI) designer, User Experience (UX) designer role in designing enterprise software applications
Demonstrate graphic design expertise through design concepts, case studies, documentation, mockups, and style guides
Experience designing interactions for complex systems - mouse and touch-based environments
Intimate knowledge of User-Centered Design (UCD) process and methodology
Experience creating wireframes and prototypes with design tools such as Adobe XD, Photoshop, Illustrator, or other Adobe CC tools
Familiarity with the fundamentals of graphic design (typography, color, line, shape, value, texture, space, hierarchy, alignment, contrast, proximity, repetition, and rhythm)
Must be able to navigate differing opinions on designs and guide the thought process of cross-functional team members towards a user experience that meets the goals of our clients
Experience with cross-browser compatibility issues in web, mobile-first and responsive designs
Understanding of modern software platforms and tools, especially HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, Angular, iOS, and Android
Ability to demonstrate visual design expertise, including gathering raw data from various sources and developing comprehensive and visually engaging designs
Experience in graphic design, typography, iconography, and brand style guides
Strategic thinker with the ability to solve problems, even when they are not fully defined
Possess an effective problem-solving ability even under short notice and must be able to come up with creative solutions and consider a variety of alternative solutions for each problem by practicing good time-management skills
Experience translating product requirements into low- and high-fidelity design artifacts and functional specifications
Solid understanding of web standards, usability, section 508, and information architecture principles
Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
High tolerance for ambiguity and a strong desire to design a simple and intuitive user experience
A genuine desire to learn and adapt to new technologies, share knowledge, team collaboration, and build team spirit is essential
