Job introduction
The BBC’s Children’s Apps and Games team deliver amazing digital experiences that inform, educate, entertain, and inspire the nation’s children. We provide some of the UK’s most popular websites and apps, which bring to life the globally renowned CBeebies and CBBC brands.
Our 4 flagship apps are all powered by the same platform. This allows us to build multi-platform experiences with a single codebase using modern web technologies. We call this the Universal App Platform (UAP).
We have over 350+ digital interactive experiences across BBC online, that are powered by our internally built game engines and delivered by 3rd parties. Some of those experiences are available on both the CBeebies website and apps (see this link for an example)
This is an exciting time to join the team as we develop new features like user sign-in, personalisation, and expanding our apps to a broader global audience. Alongside this we run investigations for solutions to technical problems and work to improve our CI/CD infrastructure.

Main responsibilities
As a Senior Tester, you will play a key role in ensuring that the CBeebies apps and game frameworks meet the department's quality standards and requirements. You’ll be responsible for defining, planning, executing, and reporting on effective test strategies to ensure robust and reliable product releases.
In this role, you'll also mentor junior team members, sharing your expertise and helping to foster their growth. Collaboration is essential, as you'll work closely with multidisciplinary development teams, often remotely and across multiple locations, to ensure smooth and timely product delivery.
Your focus will be on delivering high-quality, user-friendly products, acting as an advocate for the end user by promoting a positive and seamless experience. Additionally, you’ll proactively identify and mitigate risks, resolving critical bugs before they impact the user experience.
Staying current with evolving technologies, you'll embrace innovation, champion best practices in quality and testing , and encourage knowledge sharing across teams to continually improve processes and outcomes.
Are you the right candidate?
Essential
- Experience working with mobile apps and related technologies.
- Eager to learn and develop new skills and have experience of various types of testing (integration, functional, regression, exploratory, automated, etc.) across web and mobile platforms.
- Enjoys staying up to date on testing methodologies, particularly for mobile devices and web platforms.
- Well-versed in working in an agile environment, in addition to this you’ll be confident at planning and executing tests to ensure our products, meet requirement and performance standards.
- Experience of collaborating with product owners, UX designers, and developers to test end-to-end user journeys.
- Efficient verbal and written communication skills for conveying clear and effective information.
- Experience of writing and maintaining reusable tests on automation projects, preferably using Cypress or other JavaScript based frameworks.
Desirable
- Experience of mobile native automation frameworks like Espresso and XCUITest
- Experience of cloud-based environments, especially AWS
- Understanding of continuous integration and deployment methodologies as well as CI/CD tools like AWS CodeBuild and GitHub Actions
- Experience of performance testing and mobile app profiling tools, like Lighthouse, Xcode Instruments and Android Profiler
- Good knowledge on a variety of testing approaches that can be used in a hybrid app context.
- Experience of Visual Studio Code, Android Studio, XCode
