The Collaboration Services Engineer plays a pivotal role in enhancing productivity and communication within Infrastructure Services by facilitating the integration and maintenance of a diverse array of productivity tools. The Collaboration Services Engineer participates in designing, implementing, and maintaining tailored productivity solutions to maintain the infrastructure, troubleshoot issues, ensure security protocols, and help deliver user training.
Working closely with stakeholders across academic, medical, research, and administrative units at UCSF, the Collaboration Services Engineer will support opportunities to introduce new tools and modernize existing ones, all aimed at elevating the overall customer experience. In partnership with key internal teams and external vendors, the Engineer assists with initiatives to streamline processes and workflows, prioritizing both security and compliance. The role works extensively with the Senior Engineer(s) and the Lead, Collaboration Services to optimize productivity systems.
The Collaboration Services Engineer will positively impact UCSF’s operations and culture by ensuring UCSF’s IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the University’s mission. The Collaboration Services Engineer will advance the University’s mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across customers and stakeholders. This role will execute UCSF’s vision while modeling UCSF’s culture and values.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
The salary range for this position is $101,300 - $151,900 (Annual Rate).

The Digital Workplace Services team within Infrastructure Services is responsible for managing and maintaining UCSF’s integrated communications, collaboration, and audio-visual systems. This encompasses a wide array of technologies such as telephony, voicemail, audiovisual technology, video conferencing, and collaboration platforms. The department ensures seamless connectivity and efficient communication across various departments, supporting the institution's mission of providing high-quality healthcare, education, and research. The team plays a crucial role in implementing and optimizing digital workplace solutions to meet the diverse needs of faculty, clinicians, staff, and students, ultimately enhancing operational efficiency and collaboration within UCSF
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of experience/training in one or more of the following fields: information technology, computer science, public administration, business administration, communications.
- 3 to 5+ years Experience working in one or more of the following fields: IT, computer science, computer information systems, etc.
- Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification, and implementation. Basic knowledge of secure software development. Demonstrated ability to create software specifications.
- Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software.
- Understanding of and experience troubleshooting client, server and peripherals-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
- Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination and analysis.
- Thorough knowledge of business and process analysis functions. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
- Demonstrated experience with database administration.
- Working knowledge of database management systems and standards.
- Knowledge relating to database system design.
- Advanced database querying and modeling skills working with moderately complex databases.
- Familiarity with logical data design and data mapping or data conversion.
- Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software. Demonstrated skill at administering moderately complex security controls and configurations to computer hardware, software and networks.
- Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
- Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
- Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.
- Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
- Ability to support and optimize Microsoft 365, including Exchange Online, OneDrive, SharePoint Online, Teams, Intune, and Azure Active Directory, ensuring seamless integration and optimal functionality. Experience with Active Directory and LDAP.
- Experience with messaging related technologies such as Proofpoint, FireEye EX, and LISTSERV.
- Knowledge of network systems, network protocols and topologies, including LAN, WAN, TCP/IP, DNS, and DHCP.
- Experience in creating comprehensive technical documentation, including architectural diagrams, configuration guides, and troubleshooting procedures, ensuring knowledge transfer and adherence to best practices.
- Experience in utilizing automation tools such as PowerShell, Unix shell scripting, and APIs to streamline administrative tasks, enhance system efficiency, and facilitate seamless integration between disparate systems.
- Ability to present technical concepts and solutions to diverse audiences, including non-technical stakeholders and business executives in clear, concise, and business-friendly terms, highlighting the strategic value of collaboration initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
- Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert, Fundamentals, Collaboration Communications Systems Engineer Associate, Teams Administrator Associate, or equivalent.
- Experience supporting the infrastructure of digital workplace technologies including Box, Slack, Google Workspace, Confluence and collaboration and virtual whiteboard platforms such as Miro.
- Familiarity with system problem identification and resolution.
- Knowledge necessary to design, set up, operate, and correct malfunctions involving technology systems.
- Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination, and analysis.
- Knowledge of business and process analysis functions.
- Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
- Demonstrated ability to create software specifications.
