The Opportunity
IES is seeking a part-time, remote writing coach to join our team. This position will support the college counseling team by providing weekly writing assistance for college applications and summer programs. The role offers a flexible work schedule and can be based anywhere. However, access to high-speed internet and availability across multiple time zones are required.
As an IES Writing Coach, you will:
- Work with students individually and in small groups to develop their storytelling abilities, supporting them in writing authentic, unique essays for college applications, competitive summer programs, honors programs, and potentially scholarships.
- Help students build skills, confidence, and a love for writing creative non-fiction, including personal essays and other types of narrative and reflective writing.
- Work closely with college counselors and customer service to support student development and success.
- Work under the guidance of the Director of the Writing Team to ensure consistency and quality in coaching methods and curriculum implementation.
- Assist the Director in helping students prepare their writing for publication outlets.
- Participate in ongoing training and staff meetings to enhance your coaching abilities.
- Work with students during afternoons, evenings, and/or weekends, especially during the busy admission season.
- Attend the IES Annual Meeting (in person), help facilitate 1-2 writing workshops per year (in person), and participate in monthly or bi-monthly virtual staff meetings.
- Additional duties as assigned.
A successful candidate will:
- Have a bachelor’s degree in creative writing or a related field.
- Possess 3-5+ years of recent professional success in an education environment, teaching and mentoring young teens in creative and/or college essay and application writing.
- Be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about trends and news in the college admissions space.
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of creative writing and storytelling, along with patience and passion for advising teenagers.
- Be an excellent writer and communicator, capable of working with students at all achievement levels, including English language learners.
- Be proactive, able to work independently, and confident in establishing professional boundaries with families and students.
- Thrive in a collaborative remote environment, contributing to the success of students and the growth of IES.
- Remain flexible and calm under pressure, ensuring a supportive environment for students.
Preferred Qualifications
- Have a MA/MFA/PhD in creative writing or a related field.
- Experience working with international students is a plus.
- Experience working in higher education/college admissions is a plus.
- A record of published work is preferred.
